FRAUEN VERDIENEN BESSERES

[ English ]

WOMEN DESERVE BETTER

Press release on March 11, 2026

On March 10, the Vatican published its "final report" of the multi-year study "The participation of women in the life and governance of the Church". The "Study Group 5" was an extension of the "Synod on Synodality", which was launched by Pope Francis.

The work of Study Group 5 reveals an institution torn between the urgent desire for greater equality and the persistent constraints of a patriarchal framework. Although there are many positives in this report, the women of the Catholic Church deserve more.

The report sees the "discomfort" of women in the Church and the exodus of women due to clericalism, male chauvinism and structural exclusion. It is also seen that the failure to pay attention to the concerns of women could endanger the entire Church in its mission; Being a woman should not exclude from an important leadership role in the church.

However, this does not seem to prevent the church leadership from doing so in reality: women are still excluded from important leadership positions in the church. Symbolic breadcrumbs and empty words or strange new "women's offices" without real decision-making possibilities do not help.

Once again, we call on Pope Leo to allow the ordination of women as deacons and priests, as it is a scandal for our Church to treat women as inferior and subordinate to men. In addition, this also represents a fatal role model that supports patriarchal structures around the world and leads to physical, sexual and spiritual abuse of women.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Martha Heizer, We are Church: The men in the Vatican have obviously already heard and understood a lot, but they still do not manage to take courageous steps towards justice.

Marlies Prinz, youth representative of We are Church: Gender discrimination must have no place in the church!

Herbert Bartl, priest without office: The Vatican does not yet seem to have understood what equal dignity for men and women really means.
